What equipment and plate should be mounted on the bike 11 miles (Triathlon) race?

I have a team cadenece, but I was traveling around 20 mph during the race. I was at the lower of the two plates of the entire race and switched gears back down to more marches during the race (arts minors) The problem was that people flying by me on the bike, including people who are not as good as shape as me. I have a brand new Felt S32 So not the bike. I think a lot more races to do and so any ideas about train travel and what would be the best team. Etc small versus large plate also I'm having a problem when I leave the small crown for large plate. 50% of the time of the chain will fall off. (That's why I have not tried the big plate during the race) I do not know why. I am new to cycling and has no idea about these things, but I'm in great shape. I have the bar end and the controls it says 53/39 and 39T-S10 on the plates.

Congratulations for your efforts! Cycling is a great sport! I hope you dig into it and find it very rewarding. As mentioned, you can take the bike to a shop to make sure the gears are adjusted correctly. Take it to the store you bought it, and must do so for free. Let me suggest this: make sure "pedal sky "over the gearshift. The chain of protest if you try to change when actually hitting the pedals, and if you stop pedaling entirely in change there the possibility that either the chain or will stall somewhere. Without pedaling, go try that now and see if it helps. Coinciding with Jeff about the cadence, not is so important. Even the pros have their own preferences as to what your cadence should be. For a beginner, you should only worry about being left on the bike! For only 11 miles, and if the course is relatively open hill and the wind, you probably should (I say probably in reserve here … everyone is different) be in the large plate from the beginning. Indeed, for the races, most riders put their bikes in the big gear before the start. Just have to work a little more at first. Well, maybe I should not say most of the runners, but I did! Good luck and have a blast!
