How To Build your own BMX Bike Ramp

First you need to start with a Materials List. Here’s what you’ll need:

Eight 4 ‘x 8′ sheets of plywood

Eight ’2 x4′s

Tools: saws, hand or bank saw; hammer and nails; electric sander / sandpaper; drafting compass; rope and  chalk;  garden hose; Trestles; nail punch; pen; wood screws; 3/8″ PVC pipe; pushpin

Steps to Build a BMX Ramp:

1) Decide on the type of ramp (s) you want to build, sketch out the design and dimensions on paper.

2) To acquire the necessary materials, like wood and all you can get your hands on

3) Find a work space to use (garage, backyard, etc) and present their sources. If you are planning to build a structure large enough (permanent) try to build on the site.

4) For curved ramps with transitions, will to use the string and compass method *.

5) Once you’ve drawn and cut your templates, next comes the bracing.

6) Once the framework, will have more chances of preparing the upper part (s) of the plywood (which must bend to fit the transition without breaking). To this end, blade prop (s) – already cut to size – on a slope angle and soaked with a hose at low pressure for an hour or less.

As wood is soaked, apply an increasing amount of mass in the center of the plate (s) – with bricks or something similar – until the wood reaches the desired curve.

Now nail the wood in the 2×4 frame if your track is to have coping, make sure to leave enough room to fit comfortably. Always go with the grain of the wood while bending and applying the layers!

For a smoother transition, sand the bottom edge of the top sheet at an angle flush with the ground. Check for irregular chips. Sand or paint if desired. Paint your ramp faster! tape strips, aircraft or electrical tape or aluminum can be added to smooth the bottom edge of the transition.

* String and Compass Method

Figure how much transition curve you want (in feet and inches) and how ‘vert, where appropriate. Tie one end of the string around the pushpin and stick on the sheet as shown. Holding the string taught, measure the exact amount of transition and mark this on the string with an ink pen. Tie the drafting compass to the other end of the rope and tighten the noose is right at the top the mark you made. Holding the string taut, swing the compass from the edge of the blade in a quarter circle, marking the template with the chalk. You may have to move the device around to get the desired curve and best use of space! Place sheet on sawhorses and cut out templates carefully.

The new addition to lower TRANSITIONS:

If you want to make a ramp with a decreasing transition, you need to modify the above steps and instead of using a pin Use a round object that is 6 inches to 3 feet in diameter, like a paint can and a garbage round. Place the string in the round object and somehow secure timber instead of the pin.

As the string winds around the round object, will be shorter and the transition will become stronger. This called a decreasing radius transition and it is very cool when making launch ramps and quarter pipes.

Whether yo own and old Cheap BMX or you’ve got your bike tricked to the max with chrome BMX Pegs and hot BMX stickers it doesn’t matter. Building your own ramp is fun and even better is the time you will enjoy riding and practising on it. Because you can do the best stunts with online BMX games but until you feel the real deal you’re never gonna know how got it gets!
