What do I look for when purchasing a BMX frame?
Anyone who is into BMX Biking knows they are probably the most customizable ride there is. Once you get your first BMX it doesn’t take long before you’re shopping for different parts and swapping out things like forks, pedals, tires and of course painting your frame a different colour. Your BMX Bike frame is like to go thorough many different paint jobs before you’re done with it.
After your first bike, and if you really get into it, you are likely to strongly consider shopping for just a BMX frame sans any parts or accessories. The frame is the absolute most important part of your bike just like the foundation is to a house or the frame to a car for that matter. There are a couple of different types of BMX frames so you want to thin about what you will be doing first before you start shopping and focusing in. There are three basic frames to consider:
The BMX Race Bike Frame is light and usually aluminum or an alloy. It would also be made for narrower wheels.
A Freestyle Frame will have more weight to it because it has more steel to take the pounding of freestyle riding.
The Dirt Racing Frame is sometimes referred to as a jumper. It’s kind of a combo of the first two.
Q - I’m thinking of buying a new frame for my bmx bike. What steps have to look out for that might cause one not to fit my current budget?
A – Get something with a Spanish bottom bracket. Unlike the Euro and America (Standard) BB, are much simpler and smoother. Also, look for stress cracks in the frame. Get some 20.5 “or 20.6″. The Hawk is Fit danscomp.com for sale at $ 160 and weighs 5 pounds flat. There is a table of size of the bottom brackets. Also get something with an integrated headset. You’ll have to buy new bearings for the bottom bracket and headset, but it’s well worth it! Everything else should fit well, but you have to do the shorter string, no doubt.
