Anyone recommend a solid mountain bike front derailleur?
I want to upgrade my drive train for my XC riding style. I have a NRS3 2003 Giant and want to upgrade to a Shimano XT front derailleur. What is the exact specs i need this bike in particular? Pull top and bottom? Diameter?
Lucky for you many of the Shimano derailleurs work with either top or bottom pull. Just look at how the cable is moving now to decide what that is (I think it is over-pull )…. or see where the cable stops. Also you can use either top or bottom-swing swing with NRS. Shimano (and many models Sram, too) has begun to pack their gear changes with multi-clamp clamp adapters to fit all three sizes. From the top of my head, I would say that the NRS has a 31.8, but it may take as little as 28.6 ….. that is safe (equivalent to 1-1/4 "and 1-1/8") . The fronts are Sram …… large scale, rigid and crisp. The X.9 is competitive in price. Shimano finally did the same for '07 and '08 models and links more rigid /. Lots of sale prices online right now as the '08s began to come to market. I'd say choose one and enjoy the ride!
