Bicycle Blue
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the legacy of the Roosevelt era and the New Deal. Now, for students of history and fact, for some with a very long memory is not difficult to understand why this project was developed.
Originally planned as a link between the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Shenandoah National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway has now taken on an identity all its own.
The 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway are a testament to the care and attention and craftsmanship of the original workers and this goes quite some way to adding to the experience and enjoyment of travel on this road trip.
As you can imagine execution of an event like this took considerable experience and imagination. The landscape architect, Stanley Abbot was chosen to lead this task and as corresponds to a man who's CV includes Manhattan's Central Park did it with considerable aplomb.
The Blue Ridge Parkway took approximately 2 years to complete extending from northern Mississippi in the outskirts of Cherokee on the edge of the mountains of Great Smoky National Park in the South.
Since moving to the south west of Waynesboro pass the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke Virginia and North Carolina at Asheville before stopping just before the northern border of Tennessee, South Carolina Gatlinburg.
The Parkway is an ideal route for those lovers of bicycles. The real reason for this is that the quality of the road itself is excellent in that in fact the bike is a great wonderful way to experience the landscape at a slower pace of an experience otherwise, of a car. However, to enjoy the benefits of the Blue Ridge Parkway in a bicycle planning and the resistance to be brutally blunt. This last point is fundamental, as if the lowest point and can only be 600 meters above sea level and the highest point of 6,000 meters of various companies and Downs "off the beaten path in fact a total change in elevation of approximately 48,000 feet. That is about 9 miles to the uninitiated!
As mentioned the road effectively spans two states of Virginia and North Carolina the ground in each state is really very different from Virginia is more effective in the foothills of the Appalachians, but when you hit the North Carolina section of the Blue Ridge Parkway becomes stage Alpine assembly and much more dramatic.
Initially, work started on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1935 and in fact 52 years before the road was in reality was officially opened in 1987 as a continuous path.
To really give the Blue Ridge Parkway is due, then you have to devote two weeks to enjoy your visit and even then they may find that this is not enough.
