Bicycle Bearings

Repacking bearings bicycle: I clean the bearings of early childhood, and if so, what should I use to clean them?
This is mid-1970 a Schwinn. Obviously, if there is sand or dirt or mold me clean. My instinct is to use 3 in 1 oil, if I must, then all the fat pack on good old bicycle reliable. But if there is just nothing old grease sandy, so even need to clean the bearings, etc, and if so, what cleaning product I use?
Never use oil 3 to 1 for nothing on a bicycle. Always. You should clean everything, not just because there relube some fats and oils are not compatible. I use degreaser as Fast Orange or Simple Green (kerosene, gasoline and other flammable items are too), or if it is really bad use WD40. The bearings are probably in the retainers. Pop bearings and clean the inside of the retainers as well. If there is an offer taking place near you take one of each size and get new bearings … rebuild a box of 100 costs very little. Once clean, white lithium grea … a tub of this material costs almost nothing and it will last forever. Do not pile on fat. Just lightly coat the careers and roller bearings around a greasy finger reinstall. Putting too fat dirst only attracts and increases friction. Good luck!
